Siemens TIA Portal & Licensing Fix for Windows 11
Summary
When installing Siemens TIA Portal (v17 or similar) on Windows 11, users may encounter compatibility issues due to how Windows 11 handles user profile paths and licensing tools. This article outlines the root causes and provides a reliable solution that avoids unnecessary VM workarounds.
Symptoms
Siemens TIA Portal fails to launch or behaves erratically after installation.
Errors related to file paths containing spaces.
Automation License Manager (ALM) fails to retrieve or activate online licenses.
Attempted workaround by running Windows 10 VM is inefficient or undesirable.
Root Cause
Path with Spaces:
Windows 11 creates user profiles with a space between first and last names (e.g., C:\Users\John Smith).
Siemens installs TIA Portal in this path by default. Siemens software does not support installation in directories containing spaces.
Outdated ALM Version:
The default version of Siemens' Automation License Manager is not fully compatible with Windows 11 and may block online license retrieval.
Solution
Step 1: Uninstall Existing Siemens Software
Step 2: Custom Reinstallation Path
Reinstall Siemens TIA Portal.
-
When prompted for an installation location, manually change the path to avoid using the default user directory.
✅ Recommended path: C:\Siemens
Complete installation as usual.
Step 3: Update Automation License Manager (ALM)
Uninstall the existing ALM version.
-
Download ALM v6.2 from the Siemens support site:
